Each year, in support of UNEP World Environment Day (June 5), the United Nations Association of Australia (UNAA) recognises innovative and outstanding environmental programs and initiatives from across Australia and the important work of Australian environmental leaders through its World Environment Day Awards. The pre-eminent national awards play an important role in raising awareness about key environmental issues and challenges, and inspiring and motivating individuals, organisations and businesses to take positive steps towards sustainability and environmental excellence in their homes, schools, communities and workplaces. The category is Sustainability Leadership Awards—Large Organisations (businesses, government agencies and non-government organisations), sponsored by the NSW Government. It is designed to reward those organisations that demonstrate outstanding leadership in adopting practices that position environmental and social performance as priority areas of corporate responsibility and performance, alongside financial results. It acknowledges those organisations that understand their broader societal responsibilities and their potential influence within the community to foster sustainability, as well as within their own supply chains. Winners of the World Environment Day Awards 2013 will be announced at the Awards Presentation Dinner on Friday, 7 June at the Park Hyatt Melbourne.
